Democracy - a community

Democracy is often equated with elections or even discord. However, those who vote democratically respect all others who can vote or be elected as equals and free to act according to commonly accepted rules —a form of community. Democracy in this communal sense ensures internal peace and allows us to face common challenges in contrast to isolationist withdrawal, hatred, and war.

Democracy is a historic achievement in the tradition of communal self-determination, in the face of authoritarian or totalitarian tyranny and war. We should defend it with all our might against Putin, Trump, and every form of populist thinking. And not only that: We should make it clear to all who waver that they live far better and more securely in a large community of mutual respect than under the sign of silence, hatred, and aggressive war. Democracy is not only defensive against its enemies, but it also protects all who support and defend it.
